Brazos County Emergency Service District #1 (ESD #1) is one of four ESDs in Brazos county. Each ESD was organized and established by the Commissioners Court of Brazos County to provide fire and emergency medical care within the district's service area. ESD #1 contracts with the South Brazos County Fire Department (SBCFD) for fire and emergency medical care within the District, and collects ad valorem taxes at the total rate of $0.03 per hundred valuation for the delivery of those services. The estimated population in the 110-square mile service areas of the District is about 20,000, with a population density of around 182 people per square mile.
The South Brazos County Fire Department (SBCFD) is an all-volunteer organization that serves approximately 110 square miles of Brazos County south of College Station in the ESD #1 service area. The department was formed in 1998 through the combination of the Millican Fire Department and the Brazos County Precinct 1 Fire Department. The fire department receives most of its funding through Brazos County ESD #1, supplemented by donations that are still needed for certain uses. SBCFD operates from four stations strategically located throughout the District and provides a variety of services including:
- Structural, wildfire, and vehicle suppression services
- EMS emergency medical services (first-responder, non-transport)
- Vehicle extrication
- Public education and risk reduction
